Synergistic Activities

1. Disaster Area Student Collaboration Network

This group and activity was first created by Dr. Kondo and community planner in Kobe in response to the realization that international students at Kobe University could live here without ever knowing about the experience of disaster and recovery after the 1995 Hanshin Awaji Earthquake in Kobe. The scope of the program is to exchange of experiences between international students from disaster-prone countries and Japanese students. In the last few years exchange activities including town-watching, interview for community-organizations worked on recovery, and student symposiums have been carried out including current and former students from Kobe University, and students from universities in the United States, Taiwan, and Spain.(http://disasterrecoverystudentnetwork.wordpress.com)

2.Community Planning Assistance in Otsuchi-Town after Great East Japan Earthquake

Dr. Kondo and community planner in Kobe has started to assist community-based planning in Otsuchi Town, Iwate Prefecture after Great East Japan Earthquake. We collaborate with local non-profit organizations and empower local high school students so that they can be major stakeholder to work on long-term recovery planning.

3.Oral History Project for bereaved family in Great Hanshin Earthquake(1995)

This project has started by Kobe University professors and graduate students, including Dr. Kondo, in order to listen to bereaved families' stories how their families lost their lives. The objective is to preserve the record of human loss stories and examine the cause of the death. Dr. Kondo has played significant role in this project development, and she has transferred the lesson learnt based on this interview in public seminar and lecture to date.
